It’s never easy watching our parents, grandparents, and other senior loved ones in our lives grow too old to be able to take care of themselves and their homes. Neglecting to address this reality could unfortunately result in a dangerous outcome for our ailing loved ones, such as falls, accidents, fires, etc.

Here are 3 signs that your senior loved one may need a caregiver:

1. Neglecting personal hygiene

If your loved one appears to have stopped bathing, brushing their teeth, and generally stopped caring for their hygiene, it may be a sign that they need a caregiver to assist them with these tasks.

2. Piles of unpaid bills and other mail

When you notice your loved one has stopped sorting and opening their mail, it may be a sign that they are forgetting to pay their bills. Caregivers can help them sort through their mail and attend to the more time-sensitive pieces of mail.

3. Expired food items in the kitchen

Spoiled food is possibly a sign that your loved one has either forgotten to go to the grocery store, are unable to safely go on their own, or that they’re unaware they even need to make a trip. This is especially dangerous because it could mean that they’re either eating the spoiled food, or not eating anything at all. Caregivers can help with grocery shopping and meal preparation to ensure your loved one eats a nutrient-dense meal.
